Our 2019 Spartan 5k & Half-Mile Fun Run is kicking off this year on December 1, 2019 at the scenic Bonnabel boat launch. After a successful year 1, we’re hoping to make this year’s race even bigger and better. In order to better prepare you for what to expect, we have asked our race director and 1998 Ecole graduate, John Schulman, to answer some questions about this year’s race!
Our 2019 Spartan 5k is presented by our title sponsor Jones Construction LLC. If you are looking to sign up for this year’s race, please head to our race website here! We look forward to seeing all our Spartans!
Hey John, thanks for joining us today and answering some questions for all our Spartan Faithful out there!
“No problem. Thanks for the opportunity to talk about the 2019 Ecole Classique Spartan 5k and Half Mile Fun Run.”
What can Runners expect this year from the Spartan 5k?!
“Runners and walkers can expect to have a great time again this year. Our goal is to provide a premier race on par with what the running community has come to expect from races in the NOLA area. Of course, that means free food, drinks, and music. And every finisher will receive a beautiful Finisher Medal. Adult beverages will once again be provided by Second Line Brewing while Coca-Cola products will be available for our younger runners. We will also be giving away koozies again this year. Empty Nest Cafe, on Kent St. just off West Esplanade, will be providing the food this year.”
How are you building on last year’s success for an even better event this year?
“Last year was our Inaugural race and boy did we have a steep learning curve. I got a lot of help from Chloe at New Orleans Track Club and Chuck at New Orleans Running Systems. I highly recommend participating in any event NOTC or NORSI hosts, you won’t be disappointed. Most of the changes this year involve streamlining the registration process. There is no longer a separate registration for the 1/2 mile fun run. Instead, there is one registration for both with age-based pricing. This means everyone that pre-registers will get a T-shirt regardless of which event they participate in. We’re also doing away with paper registrations which should minimize delays from race day registrations.”
Can you give some details on what the course and 5k setup will be like this year?
“Our 5k race route starts and finishes at the Bonnabel Boat Launch heading out towards Kenner on the Lakefront Trail. The views of the lake are beautiful and the Metairie Central Business District Skyline makes for some really great looking Finish Line Photos which are provided by Zack Luther and LazyEye Photo. Head to the photo section of our website to check out the pics from last year.”
How can local businesses and the Ecole community support the race this year?
“Anyone interested in sponsoring this year’s race can email me at email@example.com. I’d like to encourage any alumni to look into their company Sponsorship Programs for Schools and Healthy Living. Even if you’re not in a position to sponsor right now, your school has a multitude of projects in the works around the campus and we can always use volunteers. Email me or Coach Sean at Ecole@spartanpride.cc to find out how you can help. But even just participating helps the school. Start a team with your coworkers and compete for the team trophy. Or just come out and walk the course and catch up with people you haven’t seen since high school.”
Where is the fundraising money going towards this year?!
“Funds raised last year went towards repairing the weight lifting room. Much needed electrical and plumbing work was done as well as installing new windows to help keep the temperature down and increase the life of the equipment. This year, our primary goal is to install a new long jump track and pit which will be raised above the Spartan Flood Plain. We also plan to purchase new track uniforms and replace worn-out equipment such as hurdles and starting blocks.”
